AS Media Studies Coursework Evaluation

My media product challenges forms of conventions because unlike many films of the horror genre it is set in the day. usually horror genre is set at night to intensify mystery and uneasiness in the audience. It allso has a female villain, while most of my chosen genre's villiains are dipicted as usually male, hideouse and big.Though to be perfectly honest i have followed sum conventions of the genre; it is set in an eery wood and feautres guns, and general violence.

My media represents particular social groups as being blood thirsty and posibly adrenaline junkies. Particular people whoe watch horror films watch them for the rush that they get out of being scared. My film's audience would be people generally aged between 15 - 50 and be general fans of the horror genre. Thow tyically young males in their tenage years are probably my prime audeince.

My media product would probably be a warner brothers production; the reason being they usually produce allot of theses type of films, while obviously not something along the lines of walt disney for rather obviouse reasons. warner brothers have allot of success making these films as they are a big budget compnay based in america which is a huge country itself.

I atracted my audience by not giving away to much about my film, people are more drawn and more inquisitive about a film they now very little about. My film allso relates to our generation as it feautures the many catalysts of a enjoyable horror flick; violence, action and s care factor. I have allso attracted the audeince by using actors that can relate to the audience more; being that they are ordinary looking people themselves. They are not astonishly good luking or incredibly muscular in their appaearnce so giving the story a more realistic feel. people tend to be atratced to a person or subject that can relate too

I have learnt to use programs like pinnacle studio 10 more proggressively since i have been doing media studies.for example editing and inserting font into my movie. Allso i have gradually got a lot better at using cameras throughout the course.

i have learnt to explore different types of camera angles and develop my camera skills further. allso my use of editing has improved.

Film Plot

After much thought i have decide to call my film the hells forgotten. The film will take place 5 years in the future in a wood on the outskirts of a city. the 3 main characters being newt, matt n dan. Hells forgoten sees newt, matt n dan running for their lives through the coppice wood only seconds behind them are a group of mutated zombies. These monsters are the original carries of the "forgotten" virus, the alpha males of the zombie outbreak. The 3 main characters have been taking out the infected on a supermarket rooftop for the last 3 weeks, with the aid of a 50 calibre sniper rifle. I have chosen the wood location similar to this one it is a mysteriouse and stereotypical location thaat is easy and versitile to use in any type of horror film.

My Preliminary

This is my preliminary it shows my use of camera angles and continuety

Fake Blood

Combine 1 part water with 3 parts corn syrup (golden syrup in the UK).
Add red food coloring and mix gently by shaking or stirring. Continue adding drops until the shade resembles that of real blood. Add a small amount of blue food coloring to achieve a more realistic shade.

Add a thickener.

Dry thickener - Add sifted flour or corn starch to your mixture, and gently mix it all again. You may get small lumps forming at the top of the mixture. Wait about a minute and they will float to the top where you can remove them.
Wet thickener - Stir in chocolate syrup until the desired consistency is reached. It will also add a realistic brown tone to the blood.
Let the mixture sit for ten minutes in a warm environment. This will give it some time to thicken. And then you can freak people out with it, it is a lot of fun.

Blade Opening Scene

This is the opening scene of 'Blade'. The fact that it starts in a nightclub is unusual, as thrillers and horror movies are normally set in a forest or dark streets. The lighting of this scene is largely made up of blues and blacks, with flashes from strobe lights. This kind of ligthing is eerie and suggests that all isn't as it seems.

the clothes and expressions of the dancers are quite aggressive and out of place to those of 'normal' people and so you get a sense of them being a certain 'type' of people. This later links to the fact that they are vampires.

the scene includes some fast cuts when the man is searching around the club. This adds suspense and shows his confusion. it adds a sense of panic. at first, you pay little attention to the dancers, until a drop of blood falls on the main man. this is then followed by the dancers raising their arms in some sort of worship, and then blood sprays from the sprinklers. as you can only see the clubbers' arms surrounding the man's head, the whole scene is eerie. the way they move their arms is as though they are worshipping the blood, and when the d.j raises his hat and the lights to the sprinlers, it is as though he is a god giving the blood to them.

28 Weeks Later

object width="425" height="344">

This scene uses tracking shots and extreme arial longshots of the lead character dom running away from an army of bloodthursty zombies. It uses the tracking shots to emphasize the panic, it makes you feel in the characters shoes and situation

This scene shows the lead character running for his life from an army of bloodthirsty vampires. The dark complections of the vampires suggests evil and there fear of the light, PLUS there lack of warm clothing shows there imunity and embrace of the cold. The mis ens scene shows its very cold , snow and warm clothing exetra and allso the chaos; a car overturned.

This shot shows three comandoes standing on a rooftop at night gazing down at a dead body. the mise en scene shows they are ready for combat as they are in armour and have guns etsetera, the fact that the camera is looking up at them shows their superiority over their current surroundings. They are some of the only survivors left in a city over riden with the undead. The night setting is very typical for a horror movie as darkness suggests the absence of light, light representing good in our minds, darkness suggesting evil.

This shot shows the lead character engaged in combat whith many lethal undead oponents. The camera angle used emphazises her athletic prowess against her oponents. The wardrobe suggests a very hot climate and the look on the zombies faces shows aggression, this contrasts with the whole zombie genre as a zombie is generally emotionless and blank in nature.

This scene shows how far humantiy will go for wealth, here we have a reporter wrestling with a blood thirsty zombie just to get the perfect story. the look on the zombie shows anger and bloodthirsty nature.

This mid-shot shows the lead character hiding, the misc en scene shows he is in a rough state topless, blood on face etsetera the dark background suggests mystery and an uneasiness to the shot. The van he is hiding behind is abandened which suggests they left in a hurry and the blood on his face suggests metaphorically the obvious reasons why.

This mid shot shows an army of hands reaching towards the lead character, the man in the background is holding a gun which suggests he is expecting danger. The characters clothes are all torn and tatty which suggests they are on the run and not taking any pride in their apearance( for obviouse reasons)

This meduium shot shows how desolate the place has become, even the expression on the lead characters face shows the confusion and fright. it shows how quickly humanity has left threw the cars, lamposts etsetera litterd everywhere. Even will smiths stauture on the ground shows metaphorically how man has fallen. The dog may allso suggets how mans best friend will be there to the bitter end

Thursday, 25 September 2008

This is a shot of milla johovich in the film resident evil. The shot used is a medium shot, the shot is a contrast. It shows the lead character in a rather feminen dress and a glamour like pose, while she is holding a huge assault rifle and a pistol which shows masculinity and power.

This is a shot from the film 28 weeks later. as you can see the figures are hiden in shadow which suggests mystery and an uneasyness about the shot. The lighting in the shot is used well as it shows clearly were the shot is ( a tunnel) yet still manages to hide the figures runing.

My Aims

As part of my AS Media Studies Coursework, I am going to film and edit my own opening to a thriller movie. This blog is to log my progress.

For my project, I'm going to make a zombie film that packs realism and scares my audience. I plan to research some existing zombie films by analysing certain movie clips and stills. I will then use this analysis to make my own film. I hope to learn more, both about producing films and the films themselves. I will be producing this movie for my coursework, and, fingers crossed, I will hopefully get my desired grade.
